Profoto Foldable Softbox: A Game Changer for Photographers

Introduction

As a professional photographer, I'm always on the lookout for new equipment that can enhance my work. These newly released Profoto foldable softbox is a game changer, and just what I'm looking for in a softbox. In this blog, I want to share with you my favorite features of these new modifiers.

Foldable and Collapsible Design

Unlike previous iterations of softboxes, these new foldable softboxes from Profoto are incredibly easy to assemble and disassemble. No more struggling to put them together. The foldable and collapsible design makes them highly portable and convenient, especially for photographers shooting on location.

Three Versatile Versions

Profoto has released three versions of these foldable softboxes. The first one is the 3-ft

octabox, which collapses easily for storage. The second is the 1x4 strip softbox, perfect for creating a narrow strip of light. And finally, we have the standard 2x3 rectangular softbox, suitable for various lighting setups.

Inner and Outer Diffusion

Each softbox comes standard with inner diffusion and outer diffusion. The inner diffusion is now equipped with a clip instead of velcro inserts, ensuring a flatter and tighter fit.

Additionally, they printed a line on the edge of the softbox to ensure the outer diffusion is always in the perfect spot. This allows for precise diffusion placement, every single time.

Additional Accessories

Profoto offers a range of accessories to enhance the functionality of these softboxes. One such accessory is the Edge mask (available for the 3ft octa and 2x3 softbox), which provides crisp edges, and reduces hotspots. Perfect for product photography or  portraits. Additionally, you can purchase egg crate grids to further control the light spread. There are also additional diffusions available, which can decrease the exposure by up to 1.5 stops. This is particularly useful when working in a studio environment with controlled ambient light where you've already lowered your strobe power as far as it can go, but still have too much power.

Reinforced Corners for Durability

One common issue with softboxes (at least for me 🤪) is the corners breaking and rods sticking through due to frequent assembly and disassembly. However, Profoto has addressed this problem by reinforcing the corners of their foldable softboxes. This ensures durability and longevity, even with regular use.

Easy Mounting Options

Mounting these softboxes onto your lights is a breeze with the Profoto system. You have two options: you can either mount the softbox onto the light after opening it up, or you can attach it to the light beforehand and then clamp it in place. Both methods are simple and secure, allowing for quick setup and adjustments.

Compatibility

One of the standout features of these softboxes is their compatibility. These new softboxes will work with literally every Profoto light that has ever been released. Whether you use ProHeads, D series, B series, or even the A series with an adapter, these new Profoto foldable softboxes will work. They are also heat resistant, making them suitable for use with modeling lamps that emit more heat. This versatility expands the capabilities of these modifiers, no matter where you are shooting.

Conclusion

If you are a Profoto shooter, the new foldable softboxes are a must-have addition to your photography gear. Their portable and durable design, along with the wide range of accessories and easy mounting options, make them a complete game changer. I highly recommend checking them out and exploring the possibilities they offer.
